Who can name
some things that happen with the number 7 in the Torah? Here are
a few:
1) 7 days of the week
2) 7 days of Creation
3) 7 weeks between Pesach and Shvuos
4) 7 species of the Land of Israel
5) 7 blessings under the chuppah
6) 7 times the bride walks around the groom at the chuppah
7) 7 days of sitting shiva
8) 7 years in the shmitta system
9) 7 primary colours in the rainbow
10) 7 musical notes in the octave (high and low C are the same
note)
G-d created
the world with a system of "seven" because the world is made up
of six physical dimensions and a seventh spiritual dimension.
There are six directions in the physical world - north, south,
east, west, up, and down. Every physical object in the universe
has three dimensions and thus six physical facets or directions.
That which sustains the object is the seventh dimension, the spiritual
source- G-d. That is why the seven day week and the seven- year
sabbatical system both end with the "seventh dimension" - freedom.
That is why the seventh day of the week is Sahbbos- representing
the spiritual or soul dimension. Thus, the Maharal states that
the number seven represents a complete unit, made up of six physical
dimensions and one spiritual dimension.
Just as the
world has six physical dimensions and one spiritual source, so
too we have six physical dimensions and one G-d- given life force-our
G-d -given soul. We have a place in the universe because we are
created of the same seven dimensions with which the world has
been created. Each of us has six dimensions, front, back, two
sides, head and heels-plus a seventh spiritual soul dimension.
Our being fits into the flow and grain of the universe and thus
each of us belong here; we have a valuable place within G-d's
plan.
Whereas the
number seven is "sheva" in Hebrew, which can also be read "savea,
" meaning full, complete and satisfied, the number eight or "shemoneh"
in Hebrew has its roots in the world "shamen" - which means "fat,
" one step beyond my natural state of satisfaction. Thus, not
only is G-d the creator of the seven basic units of the natural
world, He also orchestrates the world from an eighth "supernatural,
" miraculous dimension, beyond the natural "seven " based " system.
In this week's
sedra the Torah says: "U'Vayom Hashmini Yimol Bsar Orlaso- and
on the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
" A Jewish baby boy enters into the supernatural covenant with
Hashem on the eighth day - which is the supernatural eighth day
dimension.
